The document every migrant dreams of: My official invitation to the Australian citizenship ceremony!

When I received the official approval of my Australian citizenship in December 2024, I felt an overwhelming joy… but I also knew it wasn’t the end. Because if there’s one moment that truly symbolises this migrant dream, it’s the citizenship ceremony — that powerful, final step when, after years of effort, you officially become an Australian citizen.

But as many know —and others find out with surprise— receiving approval doesn’t mean you can already celebrate. The real transformation happens when you attend the ceremony, swear your loyalty to Australia, and receive that physical document that says: you belong here now.

A long wait, full of meaning...

Although I had passed the citizenship test months earlier (with a perfect 20/20!), the ceremony took a while to arrive. Exactly six months later, I received the dream letter: a formal invitation from the City of Gold Coast with my name, the date, time, and location where I would take my oath — at the beautiful HOTA (Home of the Arts) in Surfers Paradise.

When I opened that letter, I sat in silence for a moment. It was just a piece of paper, but to me, it represented years of visas, moves, sleepless nights, interviews, paperwork, fears, resilience, courage… and hope.

A turning point in our story...

My husband Julio and I began this migration journey back in 2018, with a student visa, a baby in our arms, and a suitcase full of dreams. Everything that followed —temporary residency, permanent residency, the pandemic, endless transitions— felt like climbing a mountain without seeing the top. But we never stopped walking.

And although I received my approval in December, Julio’s process got complicated. He was working overseas, and we missed uploading a key document. By the time we realised, the deadline had passed. Recovering his account, explaining the mistake, and crossing our fingers became a long process filled with calls, emails, letters… and a lot of patience. That’s why, when we both finally received our ceremony invitations, we knew it wasn’t just an event — it was living proof that we had made it together.

The big day… with an unexpected twist

The ceremony was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. We were beyond excited. We got dressed, got the kids ready, picked up our friends… and forgot our passports! 😅

Yes, the very same documents we had shown dozens of times throughout every migration step. Luckily, the HOTA team was incredibly understanding. They told us there were three ceremonies that day, and we could join the next one while one of us rushed home to get the passports (thank you, Julio, for that 80-minute round trip!)

In the meantime, we visited the museum and enjoyed the family moment without losing the magic of the day.

A ceremony I’ll never forget

Walking into the auditorium was deeply emotional. We were handed an envelope with the citizenship certificate, a letter personally signed by the Mayor, and a sheet explaining how to enrol to vote (because yes — becoming a citizen comes with a new responsibility: participating in elections)

They explained that we would only become official citizens at the end of the ceremony, after taking the collective pledge. I found it both beautiful and symbolic — citizenship isn’t just a legal formality, it’s a public commitment.

There were about 100 people from 54 different countries in the room. The oath moment was incredibly moving. We were given a small card with two versions: one with a reference to God and one without. All together, in unison, we said the words that made us Australians from that moment on.

We finished by turning to the person next to us and greeting them with a cheerful “G’day, mate!” — just like a true Aussie would. We laughed nervously, but with gratitude and joy in our hearts.

Small, meaningful details that made it unforgettable

At the end, we took photos, received a native plant as a symbol of our new roots, and left with full hearts. It was an intimate, meaningful, and emotional moment. And at the same time, it was simple, unpretentious — like many of the truly important things in life.

That day, I realised citizenship is not just a legal procedure. It’s a recognition, a closure, and a new beginning. It’s confirmation that every step of this journey was worth it.
